State and Local Agencies

I recognize that I cannot be everything to everyone, and I also recognize that not everyone can afford to hire a lawyer. In addition to hiring the services of an attorney, there are a number of options available for finding legal assistance. Some of these options are based on need and income; others are targeted to specific audiences, and the services they provide may be limited in scope and intended for a very specialized clientele.

Legal Aid

Legal Aid of North Carolina provides assistance to low-income clients (125% of the federal poverty guidelines). Verification of income is required, and the services provided are generally limtited to:

  • Landlord & Tenant Disputes
  • Domestic Violence Issues
  • Housing Issues (Foreclosure Assistance)
  • Some Disability Issues
  • Tax Assistance

Legal Aid may be reached on the web at http://www.LegalAidNC.org, or by phone at (919) 856-2564. Legal Aid has offices in the following cities:

  • Ahoskie
  • Asheville
  • Charlotte
  • Concord
  • Durham
  • Fayetteville
  • Gastonia
  • Goldsboro
  • Greensboro
  • Greenville
  • Monroe
  • Morganton
  • New Bern
  • Pembroke
  • Pittsboro
  • Raleigh
  • Sylva

Services for the Disabled

The following list is not complete, but is intended as a starting place:

Prisoner Legal Services

Prisoner Legal Services provides post-conviction support for prisoners inside the corrections system, including abuse claims, civil rights issues, and some appeal support

  • North Carolina Prisoner Legal Services - A 501(c)(3) non-profit law firm, created to provide inmates who are in the custody of the North Carolina Department of Safety, Division of Adult Correction with their constitutional right of meaningful access to the courts, pursuant to Bounds V. Smith. Staff attorneys and paralegals at North Carolina Prisoner Legal Services work to evaluate the criminal convictions of those who are currently incarcerated to determine whether there were any legal errors made.

The following list is the most complete I have come across. So much so, that I have not had a chance to test all of the links for currency or relevance; it appears some are broken or out-of-date. Please let me know if you find any of the links to be out of operation, or to point to invalid sites. Thanks to a poster "Flatbroke" on www.hadit.com for posting this.

Please bear with me as I clean up this list; the links became corrupted, and some have moved or been eliminated.
